150 million children have lost at least one parent, and 43 million children are currently living forcibly displaced from their home, there are at least 3 million children living in institutional settings, such as orphanages. That is many children needing help, many child protection problems to solve, and many families to strengthen. But, taken one widow and one orphan at a time, it's not too big of a problem for the 12 million United Methodists to tackle, or for the 248 million Christians living in the United States to solve - and the biblical call to care for the widow and the orphan is not such a big a challenge for us that we should avoid thinking about it, praying about it, discussing it with our fellow Christians, making an investment in the solutions, and taking real steps to finally, and completely change the outcome. Below you can see and hear the voices of Care Leavers - adults who were raised in orphanages and never reunited with family, or not until after adulthood; there are voices of church leaders who engaged their congregation in a change from supporting the building of institutions to the building of families. The global community has come to acknowledge that institutions can feed, safely house, and educate children quite well, and the people who work there can love the work they do, and even deeply care for the children in their charge; but they will still cause them irreparable harm. Because only family bonds can truly nurture a child in the way that forms character and builds community, providing the essential sense of history and belonging, an identity, self-worth, dignity, a network of lifetime support and a framework of resiliency to withstand crisis.
People raised in orphanages struggle when they become parents.
The solution to orphanhood isn't a building; it's a strong family who can withstand crisis and loss.
